Over the festive season officers from Jeppe SAPS made a number of arrests ranging from serious crime such as murder, rape and armed robbery to shoplifting and theft.
They also patrolled the streets and raided a number of illegal shebeens.
On December 4, a 33-year-old man was arrested for armed robbery.
At about 9pm, the victim was walking along Ninth Street in Bez Valley carrying a laptop when he was approached by two men who were armed with a gun and a knife.
They robbed him of the laptop, bank cards and ID book.
One of the suspects was arrested when the victim saw a police vehicle and alerted them to the crime.
In a separate incident on the same day a 32-year-old man was arrested for rape.
According to the complainant she visited the suspect in Troyeville.
While they were sitting together the suspect told her to have sex with him but she refused.
He said she would see the other side of him and pushed her onto the bed and raped her.
The victim called her boyfriend and gave him the address.
The boyfriend called the police and the suspect was arrested.
On December 6 two men were arrested for murder and attempted murder.
According to Jeppe SAPS corporate communications officer, Warrant Officer Richard Munyayi, a man claimed he was approached by the suspects at the George Goch hostel while he was leaving his room.
One of the suspects was armed with a gun while the other one was armed with a knife.
The man armed with a firearm hit the victim with the gun.
The victim ran away and his assailant fired shots and hit him in the leg and waist.
The suspects then ran away.
According to the victim they were the same men who were wanted by the police for killing his brother earlier the same month.
The suspects were arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder.
On the same day a 21-year-old man was arrested for rape.
A woman was sleeping in George Goch informal settlement when a man broke into her residence armed with a gun.
He ordered her not to make noise and raped her.
After he had finished he left the shack but forgot his glasses.
The victim reported the case at the police station and the suspect was arrested.
A 26-year-old man was arrested on December 8 for raping his ex-girlfriend.
On December 7 the arrested man’s former girlfriend was sleeping inside her shack in Jeppestown when he entered the building.
He used his cellphone light and ordered her not to make noise.
He joined her inside her bed and raped her.
The victim called her current boyfriend who alerted the police.
The man was arrested.
Three men were arrested on December 10 for kidnapping and sexual assault.
Police received information that several foreigners were held up and locked in a room in Doornfontein.
When they arrived there was no answer at the property and officers forced the door open where they found five women, two men and two children sitting on the floor.
Two of the women were able to identify the three men who allegedly abducted them.
It is alleged that the suspects sexually assaulted two of the women.
The victims told officers that the suspects wanted money from them in order for them to be released.
The suspects confiscated their cellphones.
The three men were arrested.
A 38-year-old man was arrested for rape and kidnapping on December 14.
According to the two sisters, they were sleeping in a house in Roberts Avenue in Kensington when they were woken by their mother screaming.
They saw three unknown men armed with crowbars.
The suspects ordered the women to keep quiet and two of them raped one of the sisters and left with her when they finished.
A case of rape and kidnapping was opened and one suspect was arrested.
On December 18, a 19-year-old man was arrested for rape.
Police received a complaint at around 6pm in Sydney Street in Bertrams.
When officers arrived they found a group of people who directed them to a young woman who was intoxicated.
Community members had already detained the suspect who allegedly raped the victim.
The man was taken into police custody and charged.
On January 6, a 24-year-old man was arrested for murder.
Police received information about an incident of mob justice which was taking place in Madison Street in Jeppestown.
When they arrived they found a man surrounded by community members who were assaulting him.
One of the people informed the police that the man had stabbed another man to death.
Officers rescued the suspect from the mob and took him to the hospital.
He was later charged with murder.
