Father, son wounded in shootout

On-scene information from eye witnesses suggests that the suspects wore balaclavas and were armed with AK47 rifles.

The Bedfordview SAPS is investigating a case of attempted murder and armed robbery following a dramatic shooting and subsequent robbery incident last week.

The Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said the victim reported that his car was shot at while he waited for the traffic light to turn green.

“The man said he heard two gunshots, with one hitting the front door. The victim said while he was inspecting his car, another motorist stopped to tell him the car that had shot at him was being chased by the police,” said W/O Nhlabathi.

He said the victim and his son proceeded to drive onto the N3 freeway.

“While driving towards the Buccleuch Interchange, the pair was attacked by suspects driving a white Audi. They robbed them of an disclosed amount of money,” said W/O Nhlabathi.

He said the men were taken to hospital with serious gunshot wounds.

On-scene information from eye witnesses suggests that the suspects wore balaclavas and were armed with AK47 rifles.

The SAPS has launched a manhunt for the suspects.

W/O Nhlabathi said a docket handed to the station by the Sandton SAPS states that officers found 11 cartridges.

“Five were from a rifle and six from a pistol,” said W/O Nhlabathi.

The chairperson for the Befordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF), Mr Gavin Henry, warned the residents against carrying large amounts of cash.

“So yesterday, again, we had a shootout in our town. Again the victims had just come from the diamond exchange and were carrying a lot of cash. Will we ever learn? We dread the day that an innocent resident is killed or injured in one of these shootouts,” said Mr Henry.

W/O Nhlabathi echoed Mr Henry’s sentiments.

He said people need to start listening to warnings issued by the police.

“We have always urged our people to refrain from making huge withdrawals and from carrying large amounts of cash on them. We also advise people to ask the police to accompany them if they need to make big transactions,” said W/O Nhlabathi.

The condition of the men was unknown at the time of going to press.
