South Africa fuel prices set for steep increases from Wednesday
Motorists face significant fuel price hikes from September 2, with petrol increasing by R1.34 a litre and diesel rising by up to R3.14.
South African motorists are set for steep fuel price increases from Wednesday, September 2, after the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) announced adjustments across all fuel types.
The increases are as follows:
Petrol 93 and 95 (ULP and LRP): R1.34 per litre increase.
Diesel 0.05% sulphur: R2.93 per litre increase.
Diesel 0.005% sulphur: R3.14 a litre increase.
Illuminating paraffin (wholesale): R2.13 a litre increase.
Illuminating paraffin (single maximum national retail price): R2.84 a litre increase.
LPG: 69c increase, with a 79c increase in the Western Cape.
The DMRE attributed the increases to a rise in international oil and petroleum product prices.

“The average Brent Crude oil price increased from 82.37 US Dollars (USD) to 87.88 USD during the period under review. The increase is due to the continued US/Iran tensions, uncertainty regarding the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz and higher shipping costs,” the department said.
It added that international prices for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin also increased because of supply shortages linked to the continued Russia-Ukraine conflict and lower global product inventories.
These factors resulted in higher contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices (BFP) of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 127.79 cents per litre (c/l), 321.29 c/l and 239.06 c/l, respectively.
The prices of propane and butane also increased during the period under review.
However, the strengthening of the rand against the US dollar helped offset some of the increases.
According to the DMRE, the stronger rand resulted in lower contributions to the BFP of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 21.07 c/l, 29.06 c/l and 26.69 c/l, respectively.

The department also announced an increase in the slate levy applied to petrol and diesel.The cumulative slate levy amounted to a negative balance of approximately R9.519b for petrol and diesel at the end of July.
“In line with the provisions of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, the slate levy of 83.28 c/l will be implemented in the price structures of petrol and diesel with effect from the 2nd of September 2026,” the DMRE said.
The slate levy has increased by 21.90 c/l, from 61.38 c/l to 83.28 c/l.
