Domestic workers’ forum to relaunch

The launch will mark the first session of the nine meetings to be held monthly at the Bedfordview Methodist Church.

Come February 24, the Domestic Workers’ Forum will relaunch in Bedfordview.

The forum is the brainchild of Ms Penny Steyn and promises to make a difference in the fight against crime.

Ms Steyn said the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) had invited her to offer crime prevention lessons to domestic workers and gardeners in the area.

The launch will mark the first session of the nine meetings to be held monthly at the Bedfordview Methodist Church.

The last session of the year will be at the Rosebank Union Church, where certificates will be handed out to participants.

Ms Steyn said the first lesson for 2016 will be about knowing your neighbour and managing emergencies.

“The lesson is such an important one of the 68 lessons I have written. It is filled with a multitude of riveting storytelling to enhance the know your neighbour and managing emergency [topic]. Miss this lesson adn they miss a lot. Each person will receive a written document pertaining to the lesson of the month. Domestics and gardeners are encouraged to share this with their employers’ family and friends. These lessons are fun but dead serious, focusing on motivation, education and knowledge in what to do and what not to do to prevent crime and pass on information without putting lives in danger,” said Ms Steyn.

All lessons are sponsored through the BCPF and there is no charge for attendees.

Ms Steyn said Domestic Watch is not a course that begins and ends.

“It is an ongoing process of lessons teaching crime prevention and keeping abreast of current trends in criminal activity and methods of self and household protection against criminals. The course teaches domestic workers to become informers without becoming implicated or putting their lives in danger,” she said.

Employers, domestic workers and gardeners are all welcomed.

She said members of the SAPS will also attend to add valuable information and build relationships with domestic workers.

This month’s meeting, as well as the monthly sessions, will start at 10am with registration 15 minutes prior.

The lessons are one hour long.
