Mtshali B lives to inspire

#YourStory - Mtshali B uses music to address the fees crisis

Sibusiso Mtshali is an artist who stands up for what he believes in.

Sibusiso, also known as Mtshali B, is a young artist from Bezuidenhouts Valley who is using his voice to address the youth’s issues.

Mtshali B is using his music to address the fees crisis within the country.

“I believe that music is one medium that society at large can relate to. The fees issue has been in discussion and it was necessary to appeal to the issue through another manner – one which is melodic and peaceful,” said Mtshali B.

Mtshali B said he has always loved music but his passion was nurtured when he started studying at the Campus of Performing Arts (COPA) in Kensington.

Mtshali B was also affected by the university fees issues as he was forced to halt his music degree due to money.

“I will be releasing a song titled ‘Fees must fall’ featuring Tripo J from Zambia, who is also passionate about education. The song is only the beginning. There is a documentary being compiled as well,” said Mtshali B.

He said music was not his first choice, but since the music bug bit him, he has not looked back.

Mtshali B is a vocalist and activist with a keen interest in issues affecting the country.

Through music, he believes one can address a number of issues and spark interest while getting the message across.

He is also the founder of the movement called ‘Tunaendawapi’, which is Swahili for “where are we heading”.

“The question is directed at the youth, as we are experiencing a number of issues affecting young people. The issues must be addressed but as young people how are we addressing them? More specifically, how are we addressing these issues as the youth of Africa?” asked Mtshali B.

“I’m an artist and social activist who believes in empowering the youth, especially with the Tunaendawaphi project. The Tunaendawaphi foundation aims to encourage critical dialogue among our youth, while also providing spaces for them to share daily lived experiences. It is important for them to voice out their struggles,” said Mtshali B.

He is also one of the founders of the Unsigned Movement, which was established in October last year.

The movement promotes artistic expression and provides up-and-coming artists with a platform to showcase their craft.

He believes the youth needs to create platforms to showcase and even make a difference in the community.

“I would like the youth to be active citizens in their country because they are the future leaders of tomorrow,” said Mtshali B.

His song was released on March 7 and is available on iTunes and Google Play store.
