An explosive round dropped of at an Edenvale scrap yard was immediately reported to the Edenvale SAPS by the owner.
The SAPS was contacted to defuse and collect the device.
The round was brought in by a member of the public.
“If members of the public find ammunition or explosive devices, they must not handle it but instead call the SAPS and make sure the round is not handled before the police get to the scene,” said the acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Warrant Officer Jean Olckers.
The SAPS Bomb Squad arrived on-scene and after a closer inspection, said the round was a practice round and declared it safe, not live.
The bomb unit then proceeded to remove the practice round from the business property.
“We urge people not to handle anything that looks like explosives or ammunition; these could be mortar rounds, artillery/cannon rounds, hand grenades and any other types of ammunition or explosives. Even if they think it is safe, phone the police so that the bomb squad can handle it,” said W/O Olckers.
By maintaining good relationships with scrap yard owners, the police hope to limit the amount of injuries and fatalities caused by ammunition, bombs, explosives and defuse and remove potentially harmful devices.
