Lepidopterist to speak at next MCS meeting
The talk will focus on how to turn your camera into a scientific tool.

The Modderfontein Conservation Society’s (MCS) May meeting will take place at the Modderfontein Town Hall.
The meeting will be held at 1 Casino Road on May 19 at 7:30pm.
The talk, which will be presented by the external communications/marketing officer for the Lepidopterist Society of Africa Mr Peter Webb, will focus on how to turn your camera into a scientific tool.
The talk will also focus on moths and butterflies, how to photograph them and their importance in the overall ecology.
“Apart from being beautiful creatures, butterflies and moths are sentinels for biodiversity conservation. If they are doing well, then the natural environment should also be doing well,” said Mr Webb.
“They also play a vital role in the ecosystem, providing a pollination service,” he said.
Mr Webb’s message is that it doesn’t take a scientist to make a scientific record of a sighting, and one’s interest in insects or birds, or whatever species of animal, can mean so much more than just a photo to show off to your friends.
“I want to see sightings turned into photographs and into scientific records. I encourage it, and I’ll tell you how,” he said.
