Residents fed up with crime on Jules Street
Community members of Malvern and surrounding areas took on street on July 9 to march against crime
Community members from Malvern and surrounding areas took on streets on July 8 to march against crime and illegal activities taking place in the area.
The march commenced from 1st Street in Malvern and moved along Jules Street to Cleveland Police Station where a memorandum was handed over to the Cleveland SAPS station commander, Colonel Bongani Dlamini.
Members of the community said they are tired of the senseless killings in the area.
“I was approached by taxi drivers from Jules Taxi Rank after a taxi that was going to Eastgate collided with a bakkie leaving three people dead,” said ward 118 councillor, Clr Mike Spadino.
“When I then met up with them and they said they are tired of crime and murders in the area. Most drivers have been victims in the early hours. One driver spent four months in hospital after he was stabbed. Passengers in the morning complain that they were mugged on their way to work,” said Clr Mike Spadino.
“We had a peaceful march and I would like to thank the community members, metro police, Cleveland SAPS and taxi drivers who were part of the march. We call ourselves Malvern Concerned Residents,” said Clr Mike Spadino.
Express reported on July 12, that certain taverns in Malvern had become problematic.
This comes after two men were stabbed to death on June 25 at corner Jules and 1st Street at 6am.
It is believed that the two men were returning home from a tavern when they were killed.
Cleveland Community Police Forum’s (CCPF) chairperson Ms Allison Roberts said the community’s response to the two murders highlighted numerous concerns with regards to these premises.
“Cleveland SAPS needs to place more focus on tavern and liquor outlets in Jules Street and work closer with the liquor board with regards to enforcing the Liquor Act,” she said.
A memorandum handed to the station commander demands that taverns be closed at 10pm and that the national liquor board to review all tavern licences in the area.
Meanwhile Clevelend SAPS spokesperson Constable Mpho Mashakane said no arrests have been made in connection with the June 25 double murder.
