Two suspects were arrested in the Avenues by the Edenvale SAPS for house robbery and possession of stolen property on August 13.
Spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Captain Jean Olckers, said Edenvale’s Sector Policing and the Crime Prevention Unit attended a report of a house robbery involving an elderly couple on Friday afternoon in the Avenues.
“With the help of the residents and community members the SAPS were able to apprehend the suspects,” said Capt Olckers.
He said the community members pointed out the direction in which the suspects had fled and provided assistance to the police.
When the suspects were arrested, members of Edenvale SAPS found stolen goods from the home of the elderly couple in the possession of the suspects.
The couple, who described the robbers as “aggressive”, sustained injuries during the robbery but were not hospitalised.
“The suspects are behind bars and will appear in court soon,” said Capt Olckers.
He said that the robbery showed similarities to the crime trend that has been developing over the past three weeks in Edenvale.
The trend sees suspects enter a residential property unarmed by climbing over a wall with the intention to burgle the property.
Suspects then realise people are at home and pick up a loose object from the garden, such as a brick or garden tools, to assault the residents and commit the robbery.
According to Capt Olckers, suspects break down doors or smash windows to gain access to the house.
“We will also investigate if the two arrested suspects are linked to similar crimes,” said Capt Olckers.
Capt Olckers said the Edenvale SAPS wishes to appeal to residents and the elderly at home to be alert and to lock garden tools away as these objects might be used against them.
