Show your support at the suicide awareness walk

“At the end of the walk we will release balloons in honour of all those who have died by suicide,”

On September 11 a suicide awareness walk will be held in Edenvale in conjunction with Suicide Awareness Day.

The walk which will be held between 8am and 10am will start at the Edenvale Sports Grounds on Seventeenth Avenue, go through Edenvale and end at the sports grounds.

Ms Guenever Van Vledder,who has been personally affected by suicide, said she is hosting this walk to create awareness about suicide.

Ms Van Vledder  lost her son to suicide seven months ago.

“At the end of the walk we will release balloons in honour of all those who have died by suicide,” said Ms Van Vledder.

The walk will have an entry cost of R50.

Participants will receive water, a yellow ribbon, pamphlets with information about suicide and a packet of seeds.

According to Ms Van Vledder the seeds will be planted to remember those who have been lost to suicide.

At the event Ms Van Vledder said a raffle and other prizes will be available.

Ms Van Vledder said that that the money raised will be given to the Johannesburg Chapter of the Compassionate Friends a Non Profit Organisation, to aid them in their suicide group.

She said the Social Crime Prevention Unit from Edenvale SAPS, Miss Edenvale, and the models from House of Style Models will  participate in the walk.

Ms Van Vledder requested that participants wear yellow.
