Woman (36) arrested for kidnapping boy (8)

The kidnapper told the mother of the child that she kidnapped her son because his father owes her money that he stole from her.

Jeppe SAPS together with the Family Violence, Child and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) have arrested a 36-year-old woman for kidnapping an eight-year-old boy.

The boy went missing on August 19.

“The boy left for school in the morning but did not return home,” said Jeppe SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Richard Munyai.

“His parents started getting worried when their son did not return home. They called his transport driver to ask about the whereabouts of their son but his cellular phone went straight to voicemail,” said W/O Munyai.

“The parents went to school to look for their son. While on their way they met with the driver who told them he was also going to the school to look for him because he did not find him when he went to fetch him,” said W/O Munyai.

“The mother of the boy received a phone call from a kidnapper who told her to deposit R18 000 at either Spar or Pick n Pay if she wanted her son back.

“The kidnapper told the mother that she kidnapped her son because his father owes her money that he stole from her,” said W/O Munyai.

“The mother of the boy came to the police station and reported the incident. A case of kidnapping was opened. A team comprising Jeppe SAPS, FCS and experts who deal with kidnapping and hostage negotiations was established to investigate the case. They worked around the clock from August 19 until the suspect was arrested on August 24,” said W/O Munyai.

“The child was found at a house in Kaalfontein, Midrand. He was found locked inside the house while the suspect went to the shops. The police waited for her to come back and arrested her,” said W/O Munyai.

“The woman appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court and the case was postponed to September 21,” said W/O Munyai.
