Jail and bail all for a good cause
Kensington – Park Meadows Shopping Centre will host the Jail and Bail for the Cancer Association of South Africa to raise funds for CANSA Keurboom Care Home.
Celebrities and community figures will be jailed for a good cause and to raise funds for the Cansa Keurboom Care Home in a Jail and Bail event.
Local famous faces will be put behind bars in a mobile jail situated at the Park Meadows Shopping Centre on 12 November, and the community is urged to come visit the shopping centre on the day to donate money to bail out a celebrity or community figure. Bail will be set at a certain amount.
The Keurboom Care Home is situated in Belgravia and it accommodates up to 28 cancer patients. The home was put under the Cancer Association of South Africa’s (Cansa) wing in 1975.
“This was to create a ‘home from home’ facility for patients undergoing treatment for cancer at the various hospitals in the province. They added a wing to the house consisting of 10 bedrooms which could accommodate 20 patients. Keurboom currently accommodates up 28 patients at one given time,” said Sandi van Tonder, chairperson of Cansa Keurboom Care Home’s liaison committee.
Patients come from as far as Springs, Randfontein, Carletonville and even Polokwane to be taken care of at the home while they undergo treatment. “The patients are accommodated in a friendly and loving environment. They are accommodated from Monday to Friday, and are taken to and from hospital and receive three healthy meals a day,” added Van Tonder.
She explained that most of the patients struggle to pay any fees. “As most of the patients are unemployed due to their illness, they are unable to contribute financially to their stay at Keurboom. By hosting events like Jail and Bail, the money is raised in order to finance the running costs of the home.”
The ‘Jail bird’ selection include Carlos da Rocha, Democratic Alliance Ward 66 councillor; Manny de Freitas, DA Shadow Minister of Transport; Colm Burns, a well-known member of the Kensington community; Chez Steytler, a famous face in corporate business; and Semone Skosan, a finalist in the Schwarzkopf Mrs SA Pageant.
