Smart meters to deliver electrcity
JOHANNESBURG – Municipalities are encouraged to look into new ways of delivering electricity.

Local Government and Traditional Affairs Minister, David van Rooyen said the electricity sector should look outside for solutions to the enormous challenges it faces.
Speaking at the opening of the 65th Convention of the Association of Municipal Electricity Utilities (AMEU) Southern Africa at Emfuleni Municipality at the Vaal on 3 October, Van Rooyen said it was important that electricity challenges – from generation to distribution – were looked at with a view to finding better ways to serve customers.
“Municipalities were battling with the increasing demand for electricity and the challenge of rising debt due to non-payment by consumers,” said Van Rooyen.
The three-day convention attracted hundreds of delegates from across southern Africa, including representatives of the City of Johannesburg. The annual gathering brings together role players with the aim of finding new and innovative ways to generate, manage and distribute electricity to consumers. Van Rooyen is calling on industry players to embrace new technology and used the roll-out of smart meters by the City of Johannesburg through its electricity utility, City Power, as a good example.
“The use of smart meters should be looked at in order to help us to better manage electricity usage. Technology is part of our everyday lives and we should use it to better service our people.”
