Mrs Samson joins breast cancer initiative
Mrs Samson said her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
One half of the first ever winners of Power Couple South Africa, Mrs Razia Samson has thrown her weight behind a cause close to her heart, the Power of Pink campaign and the Reach for Recovery Ditto Project.
Mrs Samson and her husband, Mr Emile, were crowned winners of the the show’s first season in December 2015.
The couple lives in Edenvale.
The Power of Pink campaign is about supporting women through the final step in breast cancer treatment – purchasing breast prostheses.
Mrs Samson said the campaign also encourages people to eat sliced or whole button mushrooms, which have been shown to help reduce the risk of breast cancer.
“How it works is that R1 from the sale of every pretty pink punnet of mushrooms purchased from Pick n Pay will go towards giving breast cancer survivors access to silicone breast prostheses. All of this has been made possible by the Reach for Recovery Ditto Project, which is set to benefit thousands of South African women,” said Mrs Samson.
She said silicone breast prostheses from Reach for Recovery cost between R950 and R2 000 each.
“State hospital patients who have had a mastectomy and have a hospital registration card can pay just R80 for these prostheses. This huge price reduction is due to the Reach for Recovery’s Ditto Project, and the price is mainly to cover admin costs. Reach for Recovery does not turn away anyone due to lack of financial resources,” said Mrs Samson.
Mrs Samson said her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I was still a baby at the time. I grew up watching my gran wear her prostheses with such pride. Doctors discovered cancer cells in her other breast 25 years later. She underwent another operation, having her second breast removed at the age of 76. My gran taught me to be kind to everyone. She told me to treat everyone with love and respect. She taught me to be a fighter. She did not die from breast cancer but she defeated cancer during her time with us. That is why I am so honoured to be part of this initiative during breast cancer month,” she said.
Mrs Samson said residents wanting to support the initiative should buy pink punnets of mushrooms.
“Head to your nearest Pick n Pay store, go big on the pink punnets of mushrooms and spread the word. Know that you’ll be supporting those affected by breast cancer, while helping to protect yourself and your loved ones with good-for-you mushrooms,” said Mrs Samson.
Mrs Samson is a mother of three girls.
She said in their spare time, her family enjoys going out to the movies as well as horse riding.
