Cansa Jail and Bail raises money for Keurboom Care Home
Kensington – Well-known people in the community spend some time behind bars in aid of Cansa Keurboom Care Home.
Some well-known people in the community were ‘jailed’ for a good cause at Park Meadows Shopping Centre on 14 November.
The Cansa Jail and Bail fundraiser was held in aid of the Cansa Keurboom Care Home.
Magistrate ‘Fury’ (Lornette Joseph) sent prisoners to ‘jail’ for a good cause. The prisoners had to beg for their freedom by asking shoppers to donate money towards their bail.
This year’s ‘prisoners’ included Joburg East Express editor, Thandi Ntobela, Ward 66 councillor Carlos Da Rocha, DA MP Manny de Freitas, Joy Stander, a registered nurse, and well-known local residents Colm Burns, Carlos Cardoso and Mariska Betscher.
Participants were arrested and appeared before Fury, who sentenced all to imprisonment until all the bail money was raised.
“I’m pleased with all the support from participants and also from the Park Meadows Centre management. We need all the support for the [Cansa Keurboom] home and appreciate all the donations we received from people in the community and the money we have received from shoppers today.
“It will make a difference at the home,” said Cansa Keurboom Care Home’s Sandi van Tonder.
Keurboom is situated in Belgravia and accommodates up to 28 cancer patients. Keurboom was donated to Cansa in 1975 by Rotary South Africa. “This was to create a ‘home away from home’ facility for patients undergoing cancer treatment at the various hospitals in the province,” she said.
“They added a wing to the house, consisting of 10 bedrooms which could accommodate 20 patients. Keurboom currently accommodates up 28 patients at any given time.”
Patients coming from as far as Springs, Randfontein, Carletonville and even Polokwane are accommodated from Monday to Friday. They are taken to and from hospital and receive three healthy meals a day. Most of the patients struggle to pay fees as most of them are unemployed due their illness.
“They are unable to contribute financially for their stay at Keurboom. By hosting events like Jail and Bail, money is raised in order to finance the running costs of the home,” said Van Tonder.
Keurboom stated that a much-needed R25 000 was raised on the day and expressed their gratitude for the support.
