Keeping Kensington clean

JOBURG - Residents cleaning their own residential area.

Clean Village, a non-profit organisation in Kensington, ensures that the area is clean.

The organisation was formed earlier this year by Sue Retallack, Michael Blake and Kevin Mark. “The idea for Clean Village came at the beginning of 2016 when my colleague contacted me and said let’s do something together to make a difference in Kensington,” said Sue Retallack.

“The company was registered on 12 April and our first day of work was on 20 June. We started with three employees working twice a week.”

Nomsa Mahlaela, Cavin Tswai and Tovias Masemola can be seen working on Queen Street, Langerman Drive, Marathon Street and Cumberland Road sweeping, collecting litter and removing shoots from the base of tree trunks.

The company works closely with the City of Joburg, reporting missing manhole covers, storm water drain covers and collapsing sidewalks, burst water pipes, leaking water meters and leaking pipes. “We also work closely with Pikitup to report and remove dumping, as well as the collection of bags generated by the Clean Village team twice a week,” she added.

“The response from these service providers has been marvellous and longstanding issues are slowly getting resolved.”

Clean Village operates on monthly donations from the other two directors. “I organise and work with the team on Monday and Thursday and my time is given on a purely voluntary basis. We would love to get some steady donations coming in so that we can continue to do this work that is making a difference to our suburb,” concluded Retallack.
