Edenvale Rotarians hear about 560km walk
The couple averaged four kilometres per hour and walked between 22 and 25 kilometres per day.
On January 23 the Edenvale Rotary Club hosted a talk entitled “All roads lead to Santiago. A journey on foot”, given by Rotarians John and Annalie Anticevich.
The couple shared with visitors their experiences on a unique overseas holiday when they walked 560 kilometres of the Camino de Santiago, in Spain, during July 2015.
Ms Linda Clarke, secretary for the Edenvale Rotary Club, said the Camino is a pilgrimage which thousands of people from many different nations walk each year.
“Although the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago mostly walk from town to town, this tour may be done by bicycle, bus, train or car,” said Ms Clarke.
Of the several routes, John and Annalie took the most popular, the French route.
The couple averaged four kilometres per hour and walked between 22 and 25 kilometres per day, and would set out at 6.30 am.
“Prior to the walk they had to obtain a Pilgrims Passport which entitled them to food and shelter when presented to the folk in Spain. This passport was stamped in various locations as they journeyed on the walk,” said Ms Clarke.
The pair said that it was a life changing experience and gave them time to reflect and think.
“Edenvale Rotary Club are seeking new members as well as ‘friends’ who might like to volunteer for specific projects,” said Ms Clarke.
She said if readers would like to volunteer, know more about Rotary, meet members and enjoy an evening of fellowship and a light meal, they can contact the secretary, Linda Clarke, on 082 929 5142.
The club meets on a Monday evening at Mongo’s Portuguese Restaurant, in Edenvale, at 6.30am.
