Community members from Edenvale and surrounds took to social media to express shock and sadness.
The funeral service for Mr Birkby will take place at the St John’s Presbyterian Church in Boksburg.
Spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, Mr William Ntladi said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash.
He said three patients who sustained injuries were transported to Edenvale Hospital.
