Da Rocha lambastes Pikitup
BEZ VALLEY – Residents urged to report bylaw infringements.
Ward 66 had its meeting on 28 February at Hofland Park Recreation Centre in Bez Valley, to discuss the challenges of the ward.
“The meeting was very much based on dumping rubble and illegal activities,” explained Ward 66 councillor Carlos da Rocha. Pikitup and Metro police were part of the meeting. Pikitup was present because they are one of the key players in the Clean Green campaign.
“Pikitup is under performing in my ward and has set my work back years because of this. Pressure has been put on them by me to shape up because this kind of performance is not accepted,” said Da Rocha.
Residents expressed how displeased they are with rubbish collection. Da Rocha said Pikitup has to improve its service delivery to the community. Da Rocha said the community also asked for Metro police to be more visible and start dealing with the bylaw issues harshly.
“[Metro police] play a big role in bylaw infringement and, in order to fight the illegal dumping, we need them in our area. They need to start implementing the bylaws and make sure residents are punished if they don’t follow them,” said Da Rocha.
Also, the issue of public drinking hotspots and drug hotspots were raised. The community was encouraged to report illegal activities.
“The interaction between Metro police and the community was great and very positive. I hope the meeting will produce results. I was also impressed by the community for attending and I would like to thank them for coming to the meeting,” said Da Rocha. He said the community needs to work together and ensure bylaw offenders are held accountable.
