EMM responds to enquiries surrounding pavements
If property owners wish to extend their gardens onto the pavements in front of their property consent from council is needed.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) commented on Edenvale resident Ms Jenny McCarthy’s concerns of pedestrian access to pavements.
The NEWS previously reported on her concerns when she said pedestrians lives are put in danger when they cannot access pavements.
Ms McCarthy said the way pavements are blocked can vary.
She said either the entire pavement has been converted into a garden or rocks have been put on the pavement.
It was the concern of Ms McCarthy that by blocking of pavements pedestrians are forced to walk in the street.
According to her this could cause further chaos on the roads of Edenvale.
Mr Themba Gadebe, spokesperson of the EMM, said without the consent of council, residents are not allowed to block off or prevent access onto a pavement.
He said even if property owners wish to extend their gardens onto the pavements in front of their property, consent from council is needed.
Mr Gadebe urged community members to obey the municipal bylaws.
