Dudu Zwane Home needs assistance from the community
JOBURG – Dudu Zwane Home in Malvern needs donations urgently.
Dudu Zwane Home, a non-profit organisation based in Malvern is pleading for donations from local community members and businesses.
Joburg East Express previously ran a story about the home which has been pleading for donations since last year. Unfortunately, no assistance has been forthcoming.
The home takes care of people who are infected and affected by HIV/Aids in the community.

“We provide the service [of] basic needs like feeding the patients, bathing them and monitoring their medication,” said the organisation’s Eve Thavhana. They home caters for up to 20 adults and children in various stages of HIV/Aids. “We also care for people who are infected with tuberculosis. We strive to allow the terminally ill to die with dignity.”
The founder of the home was the late Duduzile Zwane and Thulani Mngomezulu. The home started off at the Cleveland Police Station as a support group where food parcels were handed out. “The Akona Foundation donated a house and it was the most wonderful day for the community of Malvern [and] destitute people living with HIV/Aids,” added Thavhana.
The home started operating in 2004 with seven patients “We don’t receive any funding from the government. We are all volunteering as nurses or cleaners here. We do not get paid,” said Thavhana.

The home is faced with some challenges such as no permanent staff and no transport for patients in case of any emergencies.
“We will appreciate any donations of any kind,” concluded Thavhana.
The home offers the following support to the community:
- HIV counselling
- An HIV support group
- Death and dying counselling
- Allied social development services
- Victim empowerment
- A soup kitchen
- A hospice for the terminally ill.
