He announced his retirement from boxing in May last year.

Tributes for South Africa’s well known boxing trainer, Nick Durandt, are pouring in as news of his death broke this afternoon.

Durandt hailed from Bedfordview.

In an interview with the NEWS’ national sister newspaper The Citizen, in May last year, Durandt announced his retirement from the sport during a press briefing held at his Johannesburg gym in Melrose Arch on May 10, 2016.

The Citizen reported that Durandt died in hospital following a tragic bike accident near the town of Clarens in the Free State.

It is believed Durandt collided with a vehicle on the road between Bethlehem and Clarens on Friday afternoon, according to initial reports.

He was also the president of the Crusaders Bike Club.
