Rose Silindane says goodbye to Bertha Solomon Recreation Centre

JEPPESTOWN – Farewell party for Rose Silindane

It was all joy and tears at the farewell party of Rose Silindane at Bertha Solomon Recreation Centre on 25 April.

The staff members of the centre together with Mother Sylvia Community Service held a surprise farewell party for Silindane for her retirement after 24 years of service.

Silindane (63) started working at the centre in 1992 and said it had been a wonderful journey for her to be able to work with the community. She worked at the centre as an administrator.

“I started working for the City of Joburg long ago and have worked with different managers of the centre. But most importantly I have made friends and an extended family that I will always hold dear to my heart,” said Silindane.

She said she would miss the community she had worked with over the years, from the elderly to the children. “Parents would bring children to the centre for me to help with homework and activities. The elderly came in for their golden oldies clubs and the community used the hall for different reasons. I have enjoyed all those activities over the years,” said Silindane.

Silindane said she hoped the spirit that the staff members have of working together and supporting each other remained. “We had an amazing working relationship as staff. We helped and supported one another as colleagues and made sure we serve the community well.”

Facility manager Sharon Ndlovu said they would miss Silindane because she was like a mother to them. “She is full of respect, whether you are young or old she will respect you. She loved working with the community,” said Ndlovu. She wished Silindane well and said she hoped she would continue working in the community even though she had retired.

Silindane said she would keep active in her community. “I will be working with the ladies of my church. I will not sit and do nothing because that is not healthy,” concluded Silindane.
