George Moepadira of Observatory Golf Club speaks about his passion for golf

OBSERVATORY– A golfer with a passion for teaching.

George Moepadira never allowed his circumstances to prevent him from doing what he loves.

“I started golfing by chance. At the age of 14 years old I had a part time job as a caddy and from observing the players I developed the love for the sport,” said Moepadira, a member of the Observatory Golf Club.

Born in the North West, Moepadira came to Johannesburg to study a national diploma in professional golf training. He said a friend told him about the course and he decided to do it because it was in line with his passion for teaching golf. Moepadira said, “My passion is in teaching. I want to teach children how to golf. Because there are children interested in golfing but few people to teach as it is an expensive sport.”

He recently won the club’s championships and was the second black golfer to do so. “I was happy to win the trophy because I was not sure if I was good enough. I was sponsored to enter and I won,” he said.

Moepadira said the sport had its challenges but because of his love for golf, he always found ways to overcome them. He said his journey had been interesting and had taught him a lot.

“The sport requires patience and I learnt to develop that. It is a gentlemen sport and when you start playing it you understand what that means,” said Moepadira.

He added that his plan was to go back to North West and start golfing classes. He urged people who have the money to sponsor underprivileged golfers because the sport was expensive to play. ” If you love what you do never give up. Be dedicated and follow your passion.”
