Arbor Village takes steps to save water

The two water tanks installed in the garden at Arbor Village are connected to the spring water that used to run into the drainage in the servitude outside the premises.

Heeding the call for residents to save water, Methodist Homes Arbor Village in Bedfordview has installed six JoJo water tanks.

“The residents of the village are aware that water is such a precious commodity. During the recent water restrictions, when no watering of gardens was permitted, the reality of needing to conserve water became evident,” said Robyn Alexander, the care centre administrator.

Alexander said the village residents were able to purchase the water tanks using funds raised at the 2016 Spring Fête.

“Each year the proceeds generated by the annual fête are used to the benefit of the residents. The previous year saw the purchase of panic buttons for the residents of the independent living units. We eagerly await confirmation from residents of what the funds generated from the 2017 fête will be used for,” she said.

The 2017 fête is scheduled for Saturday, September 16.

“The tanks installed to collect the water from the laundry and then recycled back into the laundry resulted in a massive saving of R30 000. Not only was this a huge saving financially, but the amount of water saved was tremendous and showed that it is possible to conserve water if you have residents like those that Methodist Homes are blessed to have living at Arbor Village.”

The two water tanks installed in the garden at Arbor Village are connected to the spring water that used to run into the drainage in the servitude alongside the village, she added.

The water can now be stored in the tanks and can be used to maintain the facility’s well-kept garden.
