SAPS urged to address Edenvale’s concerns

Edenvale SAPS arrested 80 suspects between June 1 and 28.

At the Edenvale Community Police Forum meeting held on June 28, concerns of drug abuse in the community were raised by residents.

Edenvale SAPS station commander Colonel Malesela Mapulane introduced the new head of detectives, Lieutenant Colonel Sussan Mathebule, who has taken over from Colonel Ben Baloyi who was transferred to the Tembisan South Police Station.

In his report Mapulane informed the community that the Edenvale SAPS arrested 80 suspects between June 1 and 28.

The crimes which contributed the most to the 80 arrests included general theft, driving under the influence of alcohol, the possession of unlicensed firearms and drug related offences.

Mapulane said concerns for the Edenvale SAPS included theft out of motor vehicles and the reporting of false information to the SAPS.

He said crimes which had stabilised or decreased when compared to last year’s statistics included the theft of motor vehicles, robbery, aggravated assault (common) and assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

Mapulane encouraged the community to take a proactive stance against crime and to ensure they remain safe.

Community members raised questions about the feedback from the SAPS investigators and drug-related crimes in the community.

Community member Ilaria Di Siena, chairperson of the Ward 18 executive committee, expressed the belief that a bar near Eden Mall is connected to drug activities in Edenvale. A few community members agreed with her.

In response, Mapulane said it is difficult for the SAPS to see what the community sees as drug dealers scatter when they see police officers. He told the audience he is working hard to fight drugs in Edenvale but needs the community’s support.

“My members are encouraged to make arrests related to drugs,” said Mapulane.

Community members believe one area of concern in Edenvale in relation to drugs is Van Riebeeck Avenue and urged Mapulane to address their concerns. ECPF vice chairperson Prince Mathebula gave EMPD’s report on behalf of the metro police.

He said over 2 000 cases were reported to the EMPD in the month of June. Eight cars were taken off the roads and 33 accidents were reported.

The next meeting will be held on July 26.
