Sebenza SAPS members were doing routine patrol duties on July 22 when they arrested four men for possession of unlicensed firearms.
The officers were patrolling Chloorkop when they noticed a white Chevrolet sedan which was moving slowly and they looked suspicious.
Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, said the vehicle had four occupants and officers followed the vehicle until it stopped next to shops which were about to close.
“Two suspects exited the vehicle but noticed the officers and tried to flee. The police managed to apprehend the two and their accomplices, aged between 22 and 24. The four suspects were searched and two unlicensed firearms, 19 rounds of ammunition and muthi were found in their possession,” said Tsotsotso.
She said it is suspected the vehicle they were travelling in, had been stolen.
“When the vehicle registration number was checked on the system, it didn’t give results and we thus suspect it may have been stolen,” she said.
The suspects were taken to Sebenza SAPS. They will be facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and suspected motor vehicle theft.
