Charities to benefit at the Spring Fest
KENSINGTON– Spring fest supporting the needy.

This year the Spring Fest will support four charities from the Kensington community.
The Kensington Resident and Ratepayer Association is appealing to the community to support these charities with donations.
The charities are Dewetshof Retirement Village, Kensington Lions, Strathyre Girls Home and Aim Centre.
Each charity will have a drop box at the entrance points where people can drop off the donation at the Spring Fest on September 3.

Strathyre Girls Home was established in 1921 as a home for displaced mothers with children in Germiston.
In 1934 the name Strathyre, meaning ‘little haven’, was adopted when the children’s home was transferred to a house in Troyville.
The house continued to function until 1968 when it was moved to its current facility on 11th Avenue in Kensington.
The girl’s home is one of the caring Ministries of The Salvation Army.
Its primary function and mission are to provide a secure, caring and loving home environment in which the children’s past hurts are addressed and where a spirit of hope for the future is encouraged and nurtured.
The children are committed to the Salvation Army’s care through the children’s court due to varying degrees of abuse, neglect, poverty, abandonment or incapacity of their caregivers.
The home currently houses 47 girls, ranging from three to 18 years old.
The home receives a subsidy from the government of R2 660 per child per month. The money received from the government is not enough to run the home.
The home is in need of groceries, cleaning detergents, house ware, toiletries, face cloths, stationery, grey pants, white ankle socks, black lace up shoes size eight to 12, black pantyhose, netball kits, netballs, takkies sizes eight to 12, indoor netball nets, chess boards, soccer balls and shoes.

The club’s focus and mission is assisting community members in need. They have four service areas that Lions Clubs International focuses on. These are hunger, youth, environment and sight.
They try to alleviate hunger through food parcels and the youth have the opportunity to become involved and help save the environment through planting trees.
They need toiletries for men and women, books, stationery and any non-perishable food items.
