Traditional dance group brings the community together through music

MALVERN – "Most people tend to forget where they come from. We remind people about our culture through our music every day. People must not forget where they come from."

Winner of the Malvern Got Talent show, Masepetle Mdaki, brings joy to her community when singing and dancing.

She was born in Intabazwe in Harrismith, where her musical and performing talents blossomed.

She formed Intombi yasentbzwe, a traditional dance group, in 2015.

The other members are Intombizonke Mdayi, Refiloe Rebecca Selepe and Zanele Mdayi.

“I formed the group after releasing my first album, titled Ithemba Lami. We practise every day for two hours and residents enjoy our music and they support us,” she said.

Masepetle hopes her music will spread a message to people.

“Most people tend to forget where they come from. We remind people about our culture through our music every day. People must not forget where they come from,” she said.

She wants the group to grow and would like to see young people make a career out of their talent.

“I currently perform with three girls. I taught the girls to dance. They are my pillars of strength,” she said.

Masepetle wanted her group to be different to other Zulu dance groups in terms of appearance.

“Even though we sing and dance to Zulu songs, I wanted my group to be different. I went all out and created the outfit for my group. The outfit is not the same as other groups,” she said.

She is grateful for events like Malvern Got Talent.

“The show gave us the opportunity to get exposure and showcase our talents,” she said.

Masepetle urges the youth to work together to better their communities.
