Pietersen gives feedback on RDP project and indigents register
“People who registered for the RDP houses need to make sure that their details are up to date.”

Ward 118 Clr Neuren Pietersen held a public meeting in Jumpas informal settlement recently.
The purpose of the meeting was to report back on the progress of the South Hills RDP project and to discuss the indigent register.
Pietersen told residents that phase one of the South Hills project will be complete early next year.

He said 404 units are being built in phase one.
“Half of the units will be used for rentals and the other half for RDP.”
He urged residents to visit 222 Smith Street in Braamfontein to make sure that their details are up to date.
“People who registered for the RDP houses need to make sure that their details are up to date. The officials are busy phoning persons from the 1996-1997 list, and numerous contact numbers are not working anymore.”
Although the South Hills first phase includes only 202 RDP houses, Pieterson said there are going to be further phases coming.

Some residents expressed anger, saying they had registered for RDP housing a long time ago.
“We don’t have houses in Jumpas,” resident Sydney Sibiay said. “Our shacks burnt down not so long ago – we are not a priority. We have been staying here for so long and we have already given up on getting houses.”
Pietersen informed residents that the Department of Social Welfare will be giving out food parcels to people in need.
To benefit, he said, residents must be registered on the city’s indigent register.
“People need to be registered in order to benefit. Most importantly, it will focus on people who are in more need. Single mothers who are not working will be prioritised,” he said
Shaun Dlanjwa from the City of Joburg then addressed the community about the indigents register.
“The city faces challenges to give food parcels to residents who are not on the city’s indigents list. If residents don’t register, the city cannot help their families in terms of giving out food parcels when they pass on,” he said.
Pietersen said a community liaison officer will be appointed from the community to assist residents with the indigents register.
