Saying no to gender-based violence
"Today I feel empowered. The youth are lending their voice and highlighting a massive struggle."
With the launch of 16 Days of Activism Edenvale’s youth led a march against women and child abuse.
Edenvale’s youth, community and children from Don Mattera Place of Safety took part in the march on November 24.
16 Days of Activism officially launched on November 25 and will end on December 10.

The one-kilometre march began at the Dowerglen Spar and ended at the Siloam Word Alive Church.
It was organised by Edenvale’s Youth Desk and Edenvale SAPS.
“Today I feel empowered. The youth are lending their voice and highlighting a massive struggle,” said Danute Gawel, spokesperson of the Youth Desk.
Danute was grateful the community cared about the march and took part in it.

Besides the march, pamphlets were also handed out to raise awareness.
Sgt Jacob Mashile head of the Edenvale SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit said he was proud of the Youth Desk.
“Gender-based violence includes physical and emotional abuse, it affects all of us.
“We need to address women and child abuse across South Africa,” said Mashile.
Pastor Manuel Pascoal of Siloam Word Alive Church said he supported the initiative wholeheartedly.

“Violence against anyone is unacceptable especially the vulnerable,” he said.
After the march talks about abuse were given at the church.
The speeches highlighted the necessity for community members to speak out against abuse, report it and create awareness.
During 16 Days of Activism, community members are encouraged to wear a white ribbon to symbolise peace.
