Community braves wet weather for Festival of Lights

"Other than the weather, the festival was a great success."

Despite rainy weather the spirit of Edenvale’s community could not be dampened at this year’s Festival of Lights.

The annual event hosted by the Edenvale City Improvement District (ECID) saw about 2 000 community members brave the elements to have a good time.

Community members were treated to a variety of performances, good food and festive cheer at the November 25 festival.

Seen enjoying the Festival of Lights are Divine Nkomo, Cliff Pukane, Pauline Mhanjelwa, Thulani William and Zandile Pukane.

Along Van Riebeeck Avenue artists and bands put on shows for young and old.

As per Edenvale tradition the festival marked the switching on of the festive lights on Edenvale’s main road.

Although some of the solar-powered lights did not switch on, the good vibe remained.

Mark Verhoogt, vice-chairperson of ECID, said because of the cloud cover on Saturday, the lights’ batteries did not charge.

The festive lights will remain on until January.

“Other than the weather, the festival was a great success. Next year we are hoping more people will attend,” said Katy Young, events organiser of ECID.

Katy thanked everyone involved in the festival for all their hard work.
