“The club is here to help the community. There’s a team for everyone – whether you’re big, small, tall or short, we invite you to come and join,” said club chairman Lucas Ioannides.

An open day and registration will be held on February 3 from 9am to 11am, and all are welcome.

“The demographics of the club have changed, and teams and clubs are diverse,” Ioannides said.

The club was initially formed as a Hellenic community club, but with time has transformed into a club serving the entire surrounding community.

Community members can join a soccer, netball or basketball team where they will be coached by professional coaches to play matches.

“We believe in the love of the game and our teams are open to all, whether you want to go professional or not,” explained Ioannides.

Many of the club’s members had taken their sport to a professional level, he said, with some even playing at international professional level.

“We have a lot of players overseas; around 10 are in school while three are in varsity. Once a year international scouts host a showcase to look out for new talent in our teams. We also have links with American sponsors for bursaries.”

Ioannides noted that Clinton Ducci had recently been appointed the new head coach for the senior soccer team.

The Greek Sporting Club is also home to the Corinthians Black Aces Football Club and Black Aces Youth Academy.

“There’s a future for every child. Our soccer and netball is growing tremendously and basketball was launched last year. We are calling on all enthusiastic players to come and play.”

Terri Farmer will be in charge of the netball team this year.

“We have the best sporting facilities in Johannesburg, which include a netball court, basketball court, two tennis courts and more,” said Ioannides.

“We are family oriented, and that’s what makes us unique and sets us apart. We are about servicing the entire family and creating a safe haven.”

Plans for 2018 include more family activities and more evening activities.

The club will host a huge 60th celebration in April.

“People can expect a Greek food and wine festival, lots of children’s activities, a children’s obstacle course, food stalls, live entertainment, singers, Greek dancing, wine farmers will put up wine tasting stalls, beer tent, a cooking demonstration, carnival-like atmosphere, followed by the traditional custom of breaking plates,” Ioannides said.

The exact date of the event will be confirmed in due course.
