The Municipal Property Rates Act requires the city to review its tariffs annually and involve the public in deciding on amendments to existing ones.
About 879 005 properties were recently recorded in the city’s General Valuation roll.
“I invite property owners to comment on the proposed amendments to the municipal tariff structure for the fiscal year starting on July 1,” said MMC of finance, Clr Funzi Ngobeni.
The new tariff structure will affect the cost of water, electricity and refuse removal.
Different rates will be applied to various categories of properties, including commercial and industrial; residential, mining and municipal properties; agricultural holdings and farming land.
A public consultation meeting will be held on February 21 at 6pm at Jabula Recreation Centre at the corner of Anne Street and Athlone Avenue in Sandringham.
Ratepayers who wish to make written submissions on the proposed increases should address these to the city’s customer service centres across all regions or go to www.joburg.org.za
