Gerald Fitzpatrick House resident Dorris Bennett celebrated her 100th birthday recently. Known as Ma Bennett at the home, she has been a resident there for four years.
She was born in rural KwaZulu-Natal in 1918 on March 15.
“Ma Bennett is the second resident to turn 100 at our home. She is a loving and caring person and she always starts her day by preaching and listening to music,” said the home’s administration co-ordinator Henrietta Clementson. Ma Bennett said she is grateful to be where she is today.

“I am very happy that I have reached this milestone of 100 years. It has not been an easy journey. I exercise every day by walking up and down the passage as part of my fitness programme,” she said.
Her eldest grandson, Vincent Phillips described his grandmother as a strong person.

“The most challenges encountered can be whittled down to simple practical steps by listening to her.
“We are blessed to have her as a family,” he said.
Ma Bennette has three children, Alma, Danie and Cyril.
