Billboards beset trees

Trees are essential in creating clean air and battle harmful pollutants from factories and highways.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys’ ongoing battle with the construction of billboards in the Bedfordview area has now seen urban trees in danger.

“We are in deep troubled with our urban trees,” said Humphreys.

She said that not only are the owners of the billboards lopping the trees but that the borer beetle is also harming the trees.

Humphreys also said that residents, of their own accord, cut down unnecessary trees on their pavements.

This is against the Ekurhuleni by-laws and that residents who do this will be fined.

“We need our community and our horticultural communities to come on board to help fight this scourge. I have contacted our Ekurhuleni horticulturists to action,” said Humphreys.

She said that without any trees in the community, it will create hotspots and in turn threaten biodiversity.

“Trees are essential in creating clean air and battle harmful pollutants from factories and highways.”

She said that communities should never underestimate just how much trees are needed.
