Malvern High reward their academically inclined

The assembly was to award academic blazers to three learners and also give awards to teachers.

Malvern High School hosted a special assembly on May 24 to celebrate academic excellence.

The ceremony was attended by learners and officials from the Department of Education.

The assembly was to award academic blazers to three learners – Londiwe Mtshali (Grade Nine), Bahle Shibe (Grade 10) and Thamosha Naidoo (Grade 12) – and also give awards to teachers.

Thamosha was also named dux scholar.

“I’m happy to receive such an award. I have dedicated my time to my school work and it paid off,” said Naidoo.

She said paying attention in class helped her in her work because that helped her not to feel under pressure and made sure she got all the answers from the teachers.

She plans to study actuarial science or commercial law.

Londiwe said she is happy to receive the academic blazer.

“I’m happy and proud of myself,” she said.

She advised fellow learners to manage their time better and pay attention in class.

Bahle, who only started at Malvern this year, said she was surprised and happy to receive the academic blazer.

“My mother was concerned about me changing schools and whether I would be able to adjust. I managed and told myself I will not drop in my academics and here we are,” said Buhle.

Five teachers were also awarded for the work they do in their subjects.

Malvern High long-serving teacher Oscar Lukoto, who is head of the mathematics department, said he was not expecting the award.

“I’m so happy to receive this award. Being acknowledged for your work is a wonderful feeling,” said Lukoto.

He started working at Malvern High in 1995.

He said his journey as a teacher has been amazing and fulfilling.

“I still keep in touch with some of my students who are doing well for themselves. That makes me proud to know that as a teacher I played a role in their lives,” said Lukoto.
