Ceramic art to celebrate heritage

He was introduced to ceramic and sculpture in 1987 by another artist named Thami Jali.

Bertrams resident Jabulani Nene celebrates his heritage through his work.

The Soweto born ceramic artist’s love started in 1987 after making his first ceramic pot.

“After making my first ceramic pot, I fell in love with clay and the things that could be made from it. I wanted to learn more and create things,” said Nene.

He was introduced to ceramic and sculpture in 1987 by another artist named Thami Jali from Soweto.

“Mofolo Art Centre is where I started my journey. I was there from 1987 to 1988 and I learned all the basics at the centre.

“In 1990, I did my apprenticeship at the Kim Sacks School of Ceramics and never looked back,” said Nene.

He said his work allows him to tell his story of how he sees the world.

“My work gives me the chance to express myself. I get to tell my story of how I see everything around me and celebrate my culture and heritage through my work.

“I’m fulfilled when people use my ceramic pots. It brings me joy to know my work is appreciated,” said Nene.

He started sharing his work in 1991 when he decided to rent a studio in Johannesburg.

He participated in exhibitions and supplied his ceramic work around Gauteng and Cape Town.

He also worked with the Department of Trade and Industry and Gauteng Growth Development Agency in Italy, France, Germany and Jamaica.

Nene said he is grateful for his talent which allowed him to meet different people over the years.

“My work has given me a chance to make a living. I get to do what I love and share my culture and life experiences with others through my work,” said Nene.

He is currently a residential artist at Victoria Yards where he shares his skills with those interested in ceramic art.
