Hijacking prevention tips provided to community

It is important that residents take the issue seriously and equip themselves.

Community members gathered at Elma Park-based Trinity Presbyterian Church to learn some useful hijacking prevention tips.

The workshop was hosted by Fidelity ADT on October 6 and included information from the National Hijack Prevention Academy.

Community development manager Fidelity ADT Renee Basson said hijackings remain an issue in suburbs around Johannesburg.

She said it is important that residents take the issue seriously and equip themselves.

Topics covered during the two-hour workshop included:

• The definition of a hijacking and where and when it starts.

• How to improve awareness.

• How to pre-empt a possible attack.

• Advice on how to behave in a hijacking situation and how to get them and their families out of the vehicle.

“We are all potential victims of hijacking in South Africa. It is a horrifying reality we confront each day,” said Basson.

“The answer is to achieve confident behaviour and the course provides step-by-step instructions on hijack prevention and survival.”

Basson said it was great to see so many community members at the workshop.
