Community members learn life-saving skills

"It was held with the aim of equipping parents and children with relevant safety tips."

Community members were recently given the opportunity to learn life-saving skills at an anti-abduction workshop in Bedfordview.

The workshop was held on November 17 at the Bedfordview Scout Hall.

It was presented by director, senior Krav Maga instructor and founding member of Elite Defence Academy (EDA) Des Brown.

It was organised by Ward 19 committee member Judith Persi.

“The event was an information-sharing session which allowed community members to come together and learn new information,” said Des.

“It was held with the aim of equipping parents and children with relevant safety tips.”

The Bedfordview-based instructor said although there have not been any abductions in Bedfordview, the idea of the workshop was to be proactive instead of reactive.

He said the event saw community members equipped with the right tools on how to determine predators.

A simple example, provided by Des, on how predators abduct children includes them gaining their trust.

“We were all raised not to trust strangers of any kind, and most of us teach this to our children,” said Des.

“In order to get around this, predators slowly interact with their target child over time until they earn the child trust and are no longer seen as a stranger by the child.”

Des said once this has been achieved it is easier for predators to abduct a child.
