As schools kick the new year off in earnest, Malvern High School is optimistic of a good year following a majority matric pass at the school by its class of 2018.

Deputy principal Austin Maboa said the school had punched above its weight considering the results achieved in the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) examinations the previous year.
Eighty-nine out of 110 matric learners successfully wrote the exams with 34 learners qualifying for bachelor’s degree admission at an institution of higher learning, while 29 learners achieved a diploma entry.

“Our results were not that good in 2017. However, we have achieved an 80 per cent pass rate for 2018,” said Maboa, noting that a few learners achieved a distinction pass in mathematics, physical science and accounting.
“As educators at the school, we are preaching nothing less than a 100 per cent pass rate for the class of 2019. It is 100 per cent or nothing,” said Maboa.
“We’re only going to make it a point that as a school – we articulate to our matric learners that hard work pays. For as long as this is done, there is no way a 100 per cent pass cannot be achieved.”
The deputy principal added that an eighth subject has been introduced to widen career options available to learners post-high school into a tertiary level.
“We’ve introduced an eighth additional subject across all the current subject choices at the school,” said Maboa.
“These additional subjects are geography, economics and computer applications technology (CAT) which are all, as an eighth subject, geared towards giving learners a variety of career choices going forward.”
