New change at the Modderfontein Reserve.

According to GMPUA, the majority of operational duties will be undertaken by Taroko Developments and the EWT will still provide advice and strategic direction for conservation matters.

The announcement on social media regarding a change of management at Modderfontein Reserve management unsettled some community members.

“The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is no longer managing the Modderfontein Reserve,” the post read.

Johan Gerber from Gemprops who spoke on behalf of the Greater Modderfontein Property Umbrella Association said management changed to enhance the overall management and sustainability of the reserve.

“The Greater Modderfontein Property Umbrella Association (GMPUA) and EWT jointly decided to restructure responsibilities for matters related to the reserve.”

He said the GMPUA has been responsible for the strategic and operational management of the Modderfontein Reserve since 2012.

“The GMPUA appointed reputable third party contractors in their field of expertise.

“EWT was charged with conservation management of the reserve in July 2011.

“This role, which the EWT has fulfilled to excellent effect since that date, included being responsible for various operational duties that were only conservation-related in nature.”

EWT’s director Yolan Friedmann said the management contract ended, but EWT will still play an advisory role.

According to GMPUA, the majority of operational duties will be undertaken by Taroko Developments and the EWT will still provide advice and strategic direction for conservation matters.

“The GMPUA will retain its oversight role,” said Gerber.
