UPDATE: GDE condemns fight between Edenvale High learners caught on video
"It does not matter if the assault occurred after hours or off the school property. The GDE and governing body got involved because the learners were in school uniform."
The Gauteng Department of Education condemned the assault of a Grade Nine Edenvale High School learner.
A female learner was assaulted on March 4 allegedly by a learner in the same grade.
GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said the girl sustained minor injuries to her jaw.
“Psychosocial support was provided to the learner and will be extended to the other learner,” said Mabona.

Edenvale High School’s principal Dr Larry Harmer said the learner suspected of assault was suspended pending a disciplinary hearing on March 14.
Mabona said the parents of both learners were notified of the disciplinary procedure.
A video of the incident was shared on Twitter by Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi on March 11 and garnered over 81 0000 views.
The video was retweeted over 500 times.

Harmer said the incident occurred after school hours and off school property.
“It does not matter if the assault occurred after hours or off the school property. The GDE and governing body got involved because the learners were in school uniform,” said Mabona.
