Jonathan believes the leadership skills Jean James-Smith, North Rand district commissioner, also contributed to the group winning the award.

“It’s important to have strong leadership as it filters down to the groups within the district.”

Started 81 years ago, 38 years after the movement was founded by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the Edenvale group caters for boys and girls from the ages of seven to 18.

“To have lasted 81 years and still be strong is an achievement of its own.”

The group has been situated on a property along St David Road since it was founded.

The property was donated by a Mrs van den Broek and a Mr Alexander.

In the past 53 years, over 70 Scouts from the group were awarded their Springbok Scout Award, the highest award in Scouting.

Some of the activities the group focuses on include camping, pioneering, map reading and first aid.

The movement encourages social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual growth.

Senior Scouts and Scout leaders of First Edenvale Scout Group stand together with the North Rand District’s group of the year award which the group recently received.

“When the Cubs or Scouts first come to us, they are often young and dependent. When they leave they are wiser and more independent.”

Jonathan said the group is heavily invested in the Edenvale area and often does outreach projects at Edenvale SPCA or Thembalami Care Centre.

“The movement caters for a diversity of interests including those of nautical an aviation activities.”
