Genevieve does it for others

Harmelia Gardens Air Scout Troop graces St Giles with their presence.

Genevieve Reid of Harmelia Gardens Air Scout Troop recently paid a visit to St Giles Home for the Physically Disabled as part of her Springbok Scout programme challenges.

She successfully completed a number of tasks that St Giles had specifically requested during her visit from March 21 to 23. The tasks involved painting a section of the dining hall, decorating the inner courtyard and cleaning wheelchairs, all while cheerfully interacting with residents.

The Assumption Convent Grade 11 learner and resident of Edenvale, was supported by members of her Scouting Troop aged between 11 and 17. Her efforts go towards attaining the Springbok Award, which is the highest advancement in the South African Scout programme.

A chuffed Genevieve said: “I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the community service project.

“The most important aspect to me was interacting with the residents.”

Dianne Hasapis, who is the residents’ social support coordinator at the home, was pleased with the initiative undertaken by Genevieve and the rest of the young troop.

She praised them for recognising the importance of giving back.

“Of course the lovely interaction that the scouts had with the residents was so appreciated. The residents really loved having these fresh, eager young faces around,” said Hasapis, echoing Genevieve’s keenness of interacting with the residents.

“Genevieve and her band all felt that interaction with the residents was the most important part of their service. As such, we thank all our donors for their contributions as well as Linksfield Nursery for their enormous donation of beautiful flowering plants.”
