Jeppe hammers KES in one-sided hockey affair

Fifteen hockey games, 11 wins, three losses and one draw for Jeppe against KES.

Jeppe 1sts ran out stronger to claim a 5 – 1 win in their annual hockey match against King Edward VII School (KES) played at the Jeppe Boden Astro on May 3.

Calin Hannie, Connor Cottam and Rowan Wales scored once each while Callum Smith snatched up a brace to dominate KES in the hugely one-sided affair.

Making their exploits on the night all the more incredible, was the fact that the Jeppe team – ranked number one in the country last year – were fresh from an Asian tour where they played in eight games in Singapore and Malaysia.

Jeppe 1sts line up for mighty congratulations from the home crowd after a 5–1 demolition of KES in their annual hockey derby on May 3 and 4.

Jeppe’s 2nd, 3rd and 5th tier sides were equally up to the task as they too registered wins against KES, while the 4ths played to a 1-all draw in their game.

In the end, two days of crunching encounters culminated in 11 wins, three defeats and one draw from 15 matches for Jeppe’s under-14 – amassing a haul of 42 goals and conceding only 15 in the process.

Bryan Hillock, Hockey director at Jeppe Boys, waxed lyrical of the 1st teams’dominance.

“The 1st team are undoubtedly the top side, if not one of the top sides, in the country. Since coming off from their overseas tour, they’ve only lost once in Joburg to Westville.

“All 16 of the boys in the team have gone through to the final round of provincial trials and currently boast five SA Schools players in the side, based on the guys who made SA Schools last year,” said Hillock.
