Hospice will always remember Denise

"The hospice was her family, whenever there was a function Denise and I would always go gallivanting together."

Denise Tuffrey will be sorely missed by all at Edenvale Care Centre Hospice after she died a day after South Africa’s national elections.

Denise, the centre’s former project manager and administrator, was with the hospice family for almost nine years.

Sister Leigh, of the centre, told the NEWS Denise’s death was unexpected.

According to Leigh, Denise had gone into hospital to receive a stint after it was detected she had a heart murmur.

She died on the day of the procedure.

Leigh described Denise as a happy person who was bubbly and always full of life, who was affectionately known by the kitchen staff as “Gogo”.

“It was such a shock for all of us here at the hospice,” said Leigh.

“The hospice was her family, whenever there was a function Denise and I would always go gallivanting together.”

One occasion which stands out for Leigh was when the two of them travelled through to Hillbrow for a meeting, but got lost along the way.

“We somehow ended in the bus lane and all I could think about was that we were going to be squashed by the buses.

“Denise will be sorely missed by everyone.”

Leigh said following Denise’s death, Marlene Hooper will be fulfilling the role of project manager and administrator.
