Edenvale firefighter will miss the community

“What I will miss most of all is the fact that I will no longer be a big part of the Edenvale community as the community often used to look after us firefighters."

With more than 40 years of serving the community, Edenvale firefighter Makgabu Mmila will be hanging up his helmet as he retires.

Makgabu’s interest in becoming a firefighter was first ignited while he was still working for the City of Ekurhuleni’s roads department and municipal storage facility.

“I used to see the fire engines in the streets and the type of work which firefighters did interested me as I also wanted to help others.”

After his successful application in 1978, Makgabu started working as a paramedic at Edenvale Fire Station. A few years later he was included in the fire crew.

One of the most memorable emergencies that he responded to was a fire which occurred at a plastic factory along Hendrik Potgieter Street in 1982.

“The fire started at about 2pm and burned continuously into the evening and was only extinguished the following evening.

“Luckily there were no fatalities during the fire.”

Another aspect of being a firefighter which Makgabu thoroughly enjoyed was being able to learn more about extinguishing fires and bettering himself as a first responder.

“What I will miss most of all is the fact that I will no longer be a big part of the Edenvale community as the community often used to look after us firefighters. I will also miss my colleagues.”

As an avid KaiZer Chiefs supporter, Makgabu is looking forward to having time to watch more soccer during his retirement and attending live games to cheer his team on.

“I am also interested in starting a vegetable garden at my home just to keep myself busy.”

Makgabu’s station manager, Lilemo Ramaiba, said over the years he has formed a good relationship with Makgabu.

“I have learned a lot from him. Not only has he helped the community, but also Edenvale Fire Station. I hope his colleagues have learned a lot from him,” said Lilemo.
