Thembalami Care Centre celebrated a decade of a happiness with Alexandra gogos recently.
The Rand Aid care centre launched an outreach programme called Zamokuhle Gogos in 2009 to combat boredom and loneliness.
The programme ran for five years, before obtaining government funding.
One of the first participants was Victoria Smith, who at the time was trying to get an enrichment programme for the township’s gogos off the ground.
She met with Thembalami manager Elize Raath and the two soon discovered that they shared the same vision.
Ten years later, Zamokuhle has become part of the fabric of Thembalami.
Three days a week, the gogos come to the care centre to learn handcrafts like knitting and crocheting.
The gogos give back to the community, by knitting teddies for children and tackling other community projects.
They also enjoy benefits from health and social awareness initiatives at the facility.
Victoria said the gogos love their time at the care centre.
