Man gets 12-month jail time for malicious damage to property

Man sentenced to 12 years behind bars after being caught cutting copper cables.

A 32-year-old man was on August 13 handed a 12-month prison sentence by the Jeppe Magistrate’s Court after being found guilty of malicious damage to property.

Bonane Nyoni was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The court heard that in the late evening hours of May 28, Nyoni was arrested by a security officer while in the process of cutting copper cables near the Eskom Rotek Industries in Rosherville, and handed over to police.

“However, since nothing was stolen, the suspect was only charged with malicious damage to property, and after many court appearances, was found guilty and sentenced,” said Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan.

“The Cleveland SAPS management wholly welcomes his conviction, which we hope will serve as a warning to other criminals. No matter what type of crime a person commits, we will ensure that they get what they deserve.”
